In the 1982 draft the Mets chose 17-year-old pitching phenom Dwight Gooden. In 1984, Gooden debuted for the Mets. Gooden would go onto strikeout more then 200 batters in three consecutive years, leading the Mets to the 1986 National League pennant. The Mets put together an amazing run for the World Series title, defeating the cursed Red Sox in seven games.
