The National Basketball Association expanded into New Orleans in 1974. The team embraced the musical culture that defined the city by taking on the Jazz nickname, a contest winning entry. The Jazz also brought one of the game's greatest showmen back to his Bayou roots. Pistol Pete Maravich, who played his college ball at LSU, was acquired by the Jazz in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks. Known for his electrifying style of play, Pistol Pete helped the Jazz succeed in New Orleans. Maravich began his time with the Jazz by wearing the number 44, which represented his scoring average at LSU, as well as his Pistol nickname, which lay above the back numbers.
