On August 8, 1988, lights sparkled their way through the ivory of Wrigley Field for the first time in the history of the once Federal League yard. Night games became a frequent occurrence during World War II. War time workers were provided with the much needed entertainment of a night time ball game to help them escape the tensions brought on by the war. Yankee Stadium, which witnessed its first night game in 1946, was the home of the highest paid team in 1988. With a familiar face at the managerial helm the Yankees looked to conquer their first World Series title since Mr. October donned the pin stripes ten years earlier. The Yankees fought and clawed their way to within 3 ½ games of their division rival Boston Red Sox. Despite missing the playoffs the Yankees relied on their speed on the bases to help them stay in the hunt for October.
